Cisco VNI Predicts Video will be 70% of Business Internet Traffic within Four Years – Is Your Company Ready?
Companies that don’t yet have an enterprise-wide video strategy should take note of the newly published Cisco Visual Networking Index™ (VNI) Complete Forecast for 2015 to 2020 which predicts explosive growth in IP traffic driven predominately by video use.
Isolating business from consumer traffic, the Cisco VNI forecasts that video will account for 70% of all business internet traffic by 2021, up from 67% in 2016. The forecast also shows dramatic increases on live video streaming which is expected to grow 15-fold – a 71.9% CAGR – between 2016 and 2021.
The growing prevalence of video, and live streaming video in particular, present a unique set of challenges for businesses that are best addressed through an end-to-end enterprise video platform like Rev. In addition to needing a centralized management platform – where viewers can easily find, share and play virtually unlimited video libraries – businesses also have to deal with limited network capacity and high security needs.
Other video-related forecasts from the VNI predict that:
- Globally, 13.2% of all Internet video traffic will be Live video in 2021, up from 3.3% in 2016.
- Globally, Internet video traffic (business and consumer, combined) will will be 80% of all Internet traffic in 2021, up from 67% in 2016.
- Globally, 3 trillion minutes (5 million years) of video content will cross the Internet each month in 2021. That’s 1.0 million minutes of video streamed or downloaded every second.
The Cisco VNI underscores trends VBrick has seen within its own customer base, as video use and live video streaming – for town halls, product launches, webinars and more – is accelerating demand for its Rev enterprise video platform.
